Hungary Around The Clock
The Bertelsmann Foundation (Bertelsmann Stiftung), a German think tank dedicated to promoting reforms and democracy, announced in Berlin on Monday that it rates Hungary as the fifth most successful of the world's 125 emerging countries.
The list is led by the Czech Republic, followed by Slovenia and Estonia.
The performance of Hungary's political elite was joint 18th with India and Brazil. The continuation of the present polarisation can undermine democracy and legitimacy, the study added. Bertelsmann recommended a consensus against populism, including a social policy of helping the poor gain access to education, health and employment.
Hungary's economy is lagging behind its peers and will not catch up in the coming years. Twin deficits and high inflation also contributed to this lag, the report found.
